Highlight Of The Month: “The Village” by Wrabel

This moving video follows a transgender teenager as they struggle to navigate a world where they are told they are wrong for not fitting in and meeting expectations. The picture painted clearly shows that this person does not find support and acceptance at home. Binding, hiding, and crying, until they finally break free and cut their hair off. They are shown with a family who are all fighting and crying and hurting. Their reaction to this transformation is volatile. School offers a safer space. We see art as a form of therapy and release. We get to see the beauty in acceptance.
No, your mom don’t get it
And your dad don’t get it
Uncle John don’t get it
And you can’t tell grandma
‘Cause her heart can’t take it
And she might not make it
They say, “Don’t dare, don’t you even go there”
“Cutting off your long hair”
“You do as you’re told”
Tell you, “Wake up, go put on your makeup”
“This is just a phase you’re gonna outgrow”
There’s something wrong in the village
In the village
